"Improvements in Lexington"
Lexington Valley Star, March 21, 1861.
Normal life continued for most people during the secession crisis. "We are gratified to see that the unsettled state of the country and tightness of the money market, have not stopped the progress of improvement in our town," wrote the editor of the Lexington Valley Star on March 21, 1861. He reported on the construction of a new bank, several other commercial structures, and three new buildings at Virginia Military Institute.
