"The Yankees Repulsed and Driven From the Field"
Leesburg Democratic Mirror, July 23, 1861.
A writer for the Leesburg Democratic Mirror, in Loudoun County, reported on the fighting near the railroad junction at Manassas on July 18, 1861. "The demon of civil war," he wrote, "has at length shown itself in our land, and the fair fields of Virginia been stained with fraternal blood." Three days later the first major battle of the Civil War occurred there and resulted in a significant defeat for the United States.
