During the second week of January 1861, conventions in Mississippi, Florida, and Alabama voted to secede from the Union on succeeding days. This telegram from Florida governor Madison Starke Perry to Virginia governor John Letcher, January 11, 1861, informed Letcher that Florida had seceded the previous day. The notation "12/171. B." may have been made by the telegraph operator.
