On July 19, 1861, the Winchester Republican printed a one-sheet extra with exaggerated information about a battle near the railroad junction at Manassas, on Bull Run, in Fairfax County. The first large-scale battle of the Civil War took place there on July 21, and was a victory for the Confederates.
