"Tell your people all is well"
Boston Herald, February 28, 1861, reporting from a lost issue of the Norfolk Herald.
The Norfolk Herald reported late in February 1861 that a member of the Virginia Convention had said, "Go home and tell your people all is well, and that the Fourth of July will be celebrated under the stars and stripes." The lost issue of the Norfolk Herald from which the Boston newspaper copied this item evidently did not identify the member of the convention. He might have been George Blow, the delegate from the city of Norfolk, who had supported Democrat Stephen A. Douglas for president in 1860 and on February 4, 1861, was elected to the convention as an opponent of secession.
