During the second week of January 1861, conventions in Mississippi, Florida, and Alabama voted to secede from the Union on succeeding days. This telegram from Alabama Convention president William M. Brook to Virginia governor John Letcher, January 11, 1861, informed Letcher that Alabama had seceded. The notation "18/229.MC." may have been made by the telegraph operator.
