Following the Persian Gulf War, he fled Iraq to avoid capture and probable execution after serving as a translator for an agency with U.S. clients. He owns a carpet-cleaning business and was the first Kurdish refugee to be resettled in Harrisonburg, where he and his wife and five children still live.
